Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Table
Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a colorful mix of characters, and a exciting storyline including angels, demons, and dark forces growing in influence within the city.
Note: Key plot points for the latest installment of Campaign 4 follow below.
The Warrior Group Unveiled
The third episode concluded with a major cliffhanger and introduced the initial group of adventurers who will separate from the central cast to embark on their separate journey, distinct from the remaining groups.
The combat-focused team includes the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).
Why Split the Party?
With an extensive roster, it was evident from the beginning that having everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.
This explains, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Introduction, weaving together the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Warriors, Schemers, and Questers.
The Nature of the Combat Party
According to the DM, the warrior group is for players who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven story mode where diplomatic options are few and far between.
At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer the cleric might look mismatched, but the actions of episode 3 demonstrate why these particular heroes are best suited for the warrior group.
Reasons to Leave
For one thing, the team knows exactly where to go next after a violent first encounter with the antagonists.
Casimir of the deceased character—whose death initiated the story’s plot—exploited the foes for his personal gain, entering the secret base, attacking the rogue, and taking all the magical artifacts to auction.
The traitor then settled his liabilities and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, above the urban center, with Cyd close behind.
Character Drivers
Secondly, each character has a personal reason to exit the urban setting:
- The rogue, as the close ally and trusted friend, desires retribution.
- Kattigan knows Timmony and cautions that it is a nasty place.
- Tyranny and Wicander, having resisted his relatives’ demands to kill the target and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
- Yet, their reputation as prominent individuals in the influential clan could assist the group reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Furthermore, The fighter pledged a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his salvation and will now accompany him wherever.
Fugitives
In addition, all of them are sought by the powers that govern Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making staying in the city too risky:
- The rogue and The character are notorious outlaws.
- The strong figure and The healer betrayed House Halovar and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
- The fighter is wanted dead by the family.
This leaves them little choice but to journey toward Timmony in pursuit of the antagonist.
Upcoming Developments
Based on episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table won’t be around next week, leaving the rest of the cast members to assemble the Questers and Strategists tables.
Viewers can expect discovering which characters will be in which group in the season’s last Overture episode, released on next week.
