European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
